Connecting to the EDSServer from a Mac using Apple's file sharing

You can connect to your EdSServer space from home or work as well as from on campus. One way to do this is through "file sharing", which makes your server files appear like they're on your local computer desktop, so you can copy to or from the server by dragging files to or from the server folder on your desktop.

Here are the steps:

  1. At the Finder level, select from the "Go" menu "Connect to Server..."
dialog box to Connect to Server...
  2.

  3. Enter the server address (in our case: edsserver.ucsd.edu ) and click the Connect button.
  4.

  5. Enter your username and password for this server and click the Connect button.
    dialog box for logging in
  6.

  7. Select your own folder and click "OK" (or hit the Return / enter key).
    dialog box for selecting Users
  8.

  9. Open the Sites folder inside your folder.
  10.

Now you have your remote web folder open, and can copy files from it by dragging the file from the Sites folder to the local computer or into it by dragging from the local computer to the Sites folder. Any file in this "Sites" folder is electronically published on the web. The URL for a file in this folder is       http://edsserver.ucsd.edu/~yourusername/yourfilename
(where, of course, you would put your user name instead of  yourusername and your file name instead of  yourfilename ).

A shortcut for gaining access in the future: at the Finder level, select your Sites folder on the server, and from the File menu, select Make Alias. Drag the alias to your local computer. Then in the future, just drag a file from your local computer to the alias, and you will be able to copy the file to the server (after you supply your password).
