Connecting to the EDSServer web server from a Windows computer
using Microsoft Windows File Sharing
Connecting when on the UCSD campus:
- Start up Internet Explorer. Enter as the URL: \\edsserver.ucsd.edu .
- Enter your user name and password for the EDSServer server (which may be
different from your UCSD network ID & password).
- Open your server folder.
- Drag files into or out of the Sites folder.
Any file in this "Sites" folder
is electronically published on the web. The URL for a file in this folder
is http://edsserver.ucsd.edu/~yourusername/yourfilename
(where,
of course, you would put your user name instead of yourusername and
your file name instead of yourfilename ).
Connecting when not on the UCSD campus:
When you are not on the UCSD campus, you have to use the free VPN client to
establish a "Virtual Private Network" connection before doing the steps above.
Steps for installing the VPN client.
- Connect to the UCSD VPN web site at: http://www-no.ucsd.edu/documentation/vpn/
- Register by clicking on the link there and providing your UCSD network
id and password.
- Download the VPN client appropriate for your operating system, which is
probably "2000/XP/Vista - 5.0"
- Install the VPN client and restart your computer.
- Start up the VPN client (by selecting All Programs from the Start menu.
- Set the preference "Enable Transparent Tunneling" by checking that check
box in "Modify" - see the documentation at
http://www-no.ucsd.edu/documentation/vpn/ibm/nat/40/
Then you are ready to create a VPN connection. So after you've installed the
VPN Client (following the steps above), to connect to the EDSSERVER from off
campus:
- Start the VPN client.
- Click on the "Connect" button, and enter your UCSD Network name
and password.
Then you can do the same four steps described above for connecting when on
campus.
- Start up Internet Explorer and enter \\edsserver.ucsd.edu in
the URL field.
- Enter your EDSServer user name and password (which may be different from
your UCSD network name and password).
- Open your server folder.
- Drag files into or out of the Sites folder.
